Who won the transfer portal?
The transfer portal is a great opportunity for a natural experiment. Almost everyone gets a one-time transfer exception and NIL money is in play. I wanted to see where the best players ended up. Which conferences saw the biggest influx of talent? Which teams added the most production? So I scraped the data and this is the result.
If you hadn’t already checked it out, I applied a Player Efficiency Rating (PER) to just about every player in the college basketball universe. This rating is a measure of production – how efficient was the player in the minutes that he played. Players had to play a minimum of 100 minutes last season to yield a sample size big enough to earn a PER.
One note about this analysis – I used transfer data from verbalcommits.com. I think they put out accurate information but there is a non-zero chance that there is an error somewhere in this dataset.
